"Ten Principles Your Friends Should Know about the NRA"
2. We're
a big association so we have differing opinions. To join the NRA doesn't
mean
you have to agree with everything, just one thing: the Second Amendment
is an
individual, unalienable, constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
3. We
believe the best way to prevent gun accidents is through preventative education,
not
gun ignorance…NRA's "Eddie Eagle" program has reached more than 10 million
youngsters.
4. The
NRA welcomes its role as America's most effective advocate and leading
force for
expert education about gun safety, hunter ethics, accident prevention,
and wildlife
conservation.
5. If
lawful firearm ownership is misportrayed as a social problem, the NRA wants
to serve
as a productive and informed participant in that debate. We can help
solve social
wrongs without giving up any rights.
6. We
condemn and fight gun recklessness or misuse in all its forms, just as
we fight gun
crime. In our own firearms use, we seek to serve as models to others
of our own good
judgment and personal responsibility.
7. We
deeply believe in and honor our country, its laws, and its government.
In that spirit,
we support the right to keep and bear arms for any lawful purpose without
government
infringementand without explanation, apology, or excuse, and most importantly,
without bureaucratic permission or prior restraint.
8. Since
we view criminal misuse of firearms as the single greatest threat to Second
Amendment freedom, we advocate mandatory sentencing, victims' rights,
pre-trial
detention, "Three Strikes You're Out," and increased prison capacity.
9. We
view preservation of the Bill of Rights, and especially the Second Amendment,
as
among the most sacred duties of public service, and we elect our leaders
to vote
accordingly.
10. We
believe it serves the interest of American freedom to instill in our children
and
each generation a reverence, respect, and understanding of the right to
keep and bear
arms, its historic relevance and bedrock philosophical foundation.
